Dear Partners,
We have recently published our new ACEs Fact Sheet resource. This fact sheet offers an overview of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), including their types, consequences, and data from the 2021-2022 National Survey of Children's Health. It also presents recommended best practices from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other leading organizations to prevent and mitigate ACEs. Preventing and addressing ACEs is essential for improving health and can be achieved through coordinated efforts at the family, community, and societal levels to support affected children and adolescents.
Additionally, as the holiday season continues, we would like to remind you that it's crucial to prioritize safety when selecting toys for children. In 2023, an estimated 154,700 toy-related injuries were treated in emergency departments across the U.S., with the majority of incidents involving children 12 years and younger. Tragically, 10 deaths were reported, most due to choking hazards like small parts or balloons (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission).
To ensure a safe holiday for all, follow a few key guidelines: choose age-appropriate toys, avoid items with small parts for younger children, and ensure proper safety gear for riding toys like scooters or bikes. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, around 200,000 toy-related injuries occur each year, with children under 4 being most at risk (John Hopkins Medicine).
Taking these steps will help create a joyful and accident-free holiday season for families.
In addition, many of us will be spending more time on the road traveling to visit family and friends. It’s a joyful time, but also one to prioritize safety—especially for our youngest passengers. With more traffic and longer trips, proper child restraint in vehicles is more important than ever. In CSN’s Child Passenger Safety infographic, learn more about recent child passenger safety statistics and ways to prevent child traffic fatalities with the use of proper restraints and environmental behaviors. The infographic is available for download in both English and Spanish. You can also access resources related to our October 2023 webinar “Protecting Kids in Cars: Approaches to Child Passenger Safety” to explore the topic further. Let’s make this holiday season memorable for all the right reasons—travel safe and buckle up!
We also want to call your attention to a special open-access supplement of Pediatrics, Insights From Fatality Reviews: Informing Pediatric Practice, Policy, and Research. This supplement features 17 articles highlighting the unique findings from child death review and fetal and infant mortality review teams across the country.
Resources related to these and other child safety and cross-cutting topics are provided in the newsletter below, with those from our CSN-A partners highlighted in purple.
Please widely share these resources with your networks.
Kindly,
Jennifer Leonardo
